I wasn’t sure what to say about this Betsey Johnson vest, so I’ll let the site take the lead:
Wear a lightweight draped vest with your print leggings for a renaissance-inspired look.
Since it looks like it’s from Mercutio’s wardrobe from Baz Lurhmann’s Romeo & Juliet, I guess it could technically be considered renaissance-inspired.
I can’t really argue with that part of the description. But there is one thing I take issue with: the sheer absurdity of suggesting that this is a reasonable outfit to wear in public. The vest/hip padding is bizarre in and of itself. I don’t think that pairing it with printed leggings is going to make this outfit look more normal. Instead, it’s going to look like something a six year old would insist on wearing out of the house.
Although, to be fair, it’s Betsey Johnson. Endearing as I find her, and as much as I love her clothes because they’re so distinctly hers …. “from Mercutio’s wardrobe” and “something a six year old would insist on wearing out of the house” pretty much describes the brand’s aesthetic, doesn’t it?
