Gap Swan 1

Black Swan was a huge deal this year, not just in mainstream media, but in the fashion world as well. With costumes designed by Rodarte, it shouldn’t be surprising that the film had an impact on mainstream retailers.

Take, for example, this dress from The Gap.

The Gap has managed to capture the essence of the film in so many ways. The most obvious, of course, is the white top and black bottom – clearly, their attempt at addressing the duality of the White Swan and the Black Swan. The white top is austere, representing the rigidity of the White Swan. The skirt, much like the Black Swan, is a dark mass off chaos. The strange cut and lack of fit make the dress look as if it’s not quite right for the wearer, symbolic of Nina’s descent into madness.

This dress isn’t another of Gap’s lackluster design choices, it’s just the movie, all wrapped up in one ill-fitting package.
